Simran Kumar is an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT# 157189) supervised by Courtney Watson (LMFT #98943). Simran is a 2nd gen bicultural Asian American woman who is passionate about supporting children of immigrants (especially AAPI youth) navigating being 3rd culture-a life different from their parents culture, values and norms-and finding their way to establishing their own.
Simran works with teens and young adults who are trying to make sense of their experiences, emotions, and values in a world that may not always reflect them back. Whether you’re holding the weight of intergenerational pain, the pressure to achieve and thrive in this American society or the grief of disconnection, therapy with Simran can be a space to reconnect with yourself and the truth of how you’ll exist in your family and the world outside of your family in a way that is most resonant for you.
In her work supporting 2nd gens Simran has found that she also is really great at connecting with the parents and helping them be seen as well. Family therapy is her calling and helping bridge connections between the two generations is a necessary part of the work she does to support immigrant families.
As a recent grad, Simran is continuing her education focusing on contemplative/mindfulness based practices and somatics as she works to incorporate her own ancestral practices into the work she offers to AAPI clients. Simran believes in the power of storytelling to honor pain and nurture transformation providing trauma informed care that is relationally based, queer affirming and culturally grounded.
