While Doorway Therapeutic Services began as a psychotherapy practice, our work naturally expanded as we followed the needs of our community. Again and again, we found that healing doesn’t fit neatly into categories — and that therapy alone isn’t enough when people are navigating complex health systems, medical trauma, or psychedelic care that requires physician oversight. In response, we’ve grown into a practice that offers not just mental health support, but relational, affirming, and justice-oriented medical care — all grounded in the same values we were built on: accessibility, cultural humility, and collective healing.
Led by Dr. Akua, our medical offerings include non-clinical medical consultations, in-person health advocacy and accompaniment, and full medical oversight for clients engaging in Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) — both within Doorway and with outside providers. No matter what you are seeking, our goal is to meet you where you are and walk with you toward what’s possible.
with our Lead Physician, Dr. Akua
These 45-minute educational sessions are designed to help you ask questions, gain clarity, and make empowered decisions about your health. Whether you’re trying to make sense of lab results, understand a diagnosis, or navigate different treatment options, Dr. Akua offers supportive, non-directive guidance tailored to your needs. You can also receive help preparing for appointments and advocating for yourself in medical spaces. While this is not diagnostic or prescriptive care, it is a space for clarity, reflection, and informed decision-making. Superbills are available for your records. Initial consultations are $500, with follow-up sessions available for $400. Medi-Cal coverage for consultation services is available
You don’t have to face difficult medical appointments alone. For clients navigating high-stakes, discriminatory, or emotionally charged healthcare visits, Dr. Akua offers in-person advocacy and accompaniment. Whether you're facing a provider who doesn’t take you seriously, managing a complex condition, or simply need someone in your corner, this service offers grounding, strategic, and emotional support. Dr. Akua brings a deep commitment to cultural humility, bodily autonomy, and collective care — and will walk alongside you as a trusted medical ally. In-person support is available in the Bay Area; rates and availability are discussed during consultation.
These services are especially intended for individuals who have experienced harm, dismissal, or disconnection within traditional healthcare systems — and who are looking for a different kind of support. Dr. Akua provides affirming, culturally responsive medical consultation and advocacy rooted in autonomy, trust, and collective care. Whether you’re living with chronic illness, facing a complex or overwhelming care plan, or simply need help making sense of medical language and decisions, this is a space where your questions are welcomed and your voice is central. Many of the clients Dr. Akua works with are queer, trans, Black, people of color, or elders navigating systems not built for them — and all are met with care.
It’s important to know that these services are not a substitute for clinical medical care. Dr. Akua is not acting as your primary care physician or specialist, and does not provide diagnoses, prescriptions, lab testing, or emergency treatment. All services are educational and advocacy-based, intended to help you better understand your options and navigate your care with greater clarity — not to direct or manage it. Because these sessions are non-clinical and non-prescriptive, Dr. Akua cannot be held liable for any medical outcomes that arise from choices made independently or with another provider. Clients are strongly encouraged — and expected — to maintain an active relationship with a licensed medical provider for their ongoing healthcare needs. If a situation arises that calls for urgent, specialized, or ongoing medical care, Dr. Akua can offer support in identifying appropriate resources, but she does not provide acute or primary medical services herself in this role.
Expanding Access to Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy
While clinical services are not available for consultation and advocacy, we do offer clinical services for Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy. Even though we offer KAP here at Doorways, we know that many clients are already working with their own trusted therapists or psychedelic facilitators outside of our practice — and still need a licensed physician to provide medical oversight. In the spirit of expanding access to legal psychedelic care, our medical team is available to provide KAP medical assessments, clearance, and ongoing monitoring for clients working with external clinicians.
This service includes a full medical intake to assess whether ketamine is safe and appropriate for you, based on your physical and psychiatric health history offering clearance and prescribing when clinically indicated and providing follow-up oversight throughout the course of your treatment. Our team will collaborate with your therapist to ensure care is coordinated and informed by medical insight. In some cases, this may include modifying treatment plans, or withdrawing clearance if safety concerns arise.
Please note: while this is a clinical service involving direct medical care, our team will not be acting as your primary care provider or psychiatrist. Their role is limited to evaluating, prescribing and overseeing your use of ketamine for therapeutic purposes. You are expected to maintain ongoing medical care for all other health concerns. If you develop new or urgent health issues during treatment, they may refer you to your primary care physician or pause your clearance until those needs are addressed.
Let us support you in being confident about your medical decisions
